Louise Weber, known as \u201cLa Goulue\u201d<\/b><\/h3>

Born in 1866, Louise Weber<\/b>, better known as La Goulue<\/i>, began dancing as a teenager in popular Parisian dance halls. Of modest origins, she worked as a laundress while also posing for artists and photographers. Her charisma and talent soon caught the attention of cabaret owners, and she became a professional dancer.<\/p>

From 1889 to 1895<\/b>, she rose to stardom alongside her stage partner Valentin le D\u00e9soss\u00e9<\/b>, captivating Paris with her spirited personality and bold performances. Known for her daring neckline and mischievous charm, La Goulue became the darling of Belle \u00c9poque Paris<\/b> and a muse to Toulouse-Lautrec<\/b>, who immortalized her in his paintings.<\/p>

A free and provocative woman, she was famous for walking through Montmartre with a goat on a leash, calling it her \u201cmale\u201d\u2014a cheeky jab at the patriarchal norms of her time, when French law still demanded that wives \u201cobey their husbands.\u201d<\/p>

Her nickname, \u201cLa Goulue\u201d (\u201cthe glutton\u201d), is said to have come either from a former lover, Gaston Goulu-Chilapane, or from her habit of finishing customers\u2019 drinks!<\/p>

Jeanne Louise Beaudon, known as \u201cJane Avril\u201d<\/b><\/h3>

Born into a troubled family, Jeanne Louise Beaudon<\/b> endured an abusive childhood and was institutionalized at age 14 for nervous disorders. Released two years later, she found refuge in dance, which became both her passion and therapy.<\/p>

Introduced to Paris\u2019s dance scene by prostitutes who took her under their wing, she discovered her vocation at Bal Bullier<\/b>, adopting the stage name Jane Avril<\/b>. Her unique, twitch-like dance movements\u2014partly inspired by her medical past\u2014earned her the nickname \u201cJane the Crazy.\u201d<\/i><\/i><\/p>

In 1889<\/b>, she became one of the queens of the cancan<\/b> in Montmartre, rivaling La Goulue. She was granted special privileges\u2014such as wearing colored petticoats while others had to wear white\u2014and performed solo with a style that was frenzied yet elegant<\/b>, never vulgar.<\/p>

Cultured and sensitive, Jane Avril became both a close friend and muse of Toulouse-Lautrec<\/b>, who painted her several times. She later helped spread the French Cancan across Europe<\/b> with Mademoiselle \u00c9glantine\u2019s troupe.<\/p>

Marie Blanchard, known as \u201cNini Pattes-en-l\u2019Air\u201d<\/b><\/h3>

A talented dancer and stage partner of both La Goulue and Jane Avril, Marie Blanchard<\/b>, nicknamed \u201cNini Pattes-en-l\u2019Air\u201d<\/i> (\u201cNini Legs-in-the-Air\u201d), was one of the first women to teach the cancan\u2019s signature high kicks and splits<\/b> to younger dancers.<\/p>

Her informal \u201cschool,\u201d however, drew police suspicion for supposed \u201cimmorality\u201d and was eventually forced to close. Despite that, Nini Pattes-en-l\u2019Air remained a beloved and daring figure in Montmartre\u2019s cabaret world.<\/p>

Lucienne Beuze, known as \u201cGrille d\u2019\u00c9gout\u201d<\/b><\/h3>

Though less documented than her peers, Lucienne Beuze<\/b>, alias \u201cGrille d\u2019\u00c9gout\u201d<\/i> (\u201cSewer Grate\u201d), remains a key figure in the cancan\u2019s history. Formerly a schoolteacher, she became one of the first choreographers and instructors<\/b> of the dance.<\/p>

Alongside C\u00e9leste Mogador<\/b>, she is said to have trained and launched La Goulue\u2019s career<\/b>. Her unflattering nickname reportedly came from the gap between her teeth\u2014but her influence on the art form was anything but small.<\/p>

Am\u00e9lie Badel, known as \u201cRigolboche\u201d<\/b><\/h3>

Born in 1842, Am\u00e9lie Marguerite Badel<\/b>, better known as Rigolboche<\/i> (a slang term meaning \u201cfunny\u201d or \u201cplayful\u201d), was one of the earliest stars of the French Cancan<\/b>.<\/p>

As a teenager, she performed in various dance halls, including Bal Mabille<\/b> and Casino-Cadet<\/b>, reaching the height of her fame around 1860<\/b>. She was known for her elegance, energy, and boldness\u2014and is often credited with inventing a now-classic cancan sequence of rhythmic leg kicks.<\/p>

Her legend even inspired a French musical film<\/b>, Rigolboche<\/i>, directed by Christian-Jaque in 1936<\/b>.<\/p>
